Research Interests
Dr. Douglas Guiffrida is a nationally certified counselor, licensed mental health counselor in NY State, and an approved clinical supervisor.
His research focuses on the experiences of Students of Color who attend predominantly white institutions.
Dr. Guiffrida is also researching pedagogical methods to improve the practices used in teaching counseling theories and supervising counselors in training. He is author of the book, "Constructive Clinical Supervision in Counseling and Psychotherapy" (Routledge). He has presented his research at numerous professional conferences and has conducted workshops throughout the country on clinical supervision and improving the experiences of College Students of Color.
Teaching Interests
Douglas Guiffrida's teaching interests include counselor supervision, counseling theory, college student retention, multicultural counseling, and counseling skills and communication techniques for teachers and administrators. Selected course syllabi are available to the right.

- ED 430 College Retention - Theory Research and Practice.pdf - This course introduces students to salient research, theory, and practice related to college student support and retention. Students will explore cultural, institutional, and individual factors that contribute to college student attrition and critically review theories attempting to explain the student departure process. Effective student support and retention practices, programs, and assessment procedures will also be identified, examined, and implemented.
- ED 483 Counseling and Communications Skills.pdf - This course introduces teachers to the core perspectives of counseling as a form of communication. The intent of this course is for students to examine dyadic and small group communication to assist them in facilitating effective interpersonal interactions. The course combines experiential learning with group discussion, participant observation, and mini-lecture. Topics include the contextual characteristics, processes, and practices of facilitation; varieties of helping mediated by communication; differences in working with individuals or small groups; understanding and negotiating group conflict; cultural dimensions of communication; leadership processes; and collaboration across professional contexts.
- EDU 457 Counseling Theory and Practice I.pdf - The course is designed to develop students’ basic counseling skills. Class meetings will be primarily experiential. In small groups, students will practice basic counseling skills, discuss and practice counseling intervention strategies, and present their own practice sessions for discussion.
